What is Confirmation of Payee (Australia)?

Confirmation of Payee (CoP) is a name-checking service. It allows individuals and businesses with an address in Australia, sending payments to bank accounts in Australia, to verify if the recipient's name matches the name on their account.

It helps make sure that people are sending money to the correct account. It’s part of a greater effort by Australian financial institutions to tackle scams and fraud.

Always double-check whether you're sending money to the right person or business before finishing the payment.

Sending money to an AUD recipient with Wise

This is only available to personal or business customers with a corresponding address in Australia.

When setting up a new AUD recipient, we’ll tell you if the name you entered matches the one listed for those account details. We'll also let you know if we haven’t been able to check the name.

If you decide to continue without receiving confirmation of the name being correct, we may not be able to recover your money if it ends up in the wrong account.

Matching outcomes

When you set up a new AUD recipient using their BSB and account number, we'll automatically check their name with their bank. You'll receive one of these outcomes before sending your payment:

  • Match — the name completely matches the account holder's name, so you can safely send your payment

  • Close match — the name is similar, but it's not an exact match, like 'Mick Jager' instead of 'Mick Jagger'

  • No match — the name doesn’t match the account. Check the correct details with your recipient before sending money, as wrong payments can be difficult to recover

  • Could not confirm name match — this may happen if the CoP is unavailable, or the recipient has opted out from CoP. Double-check all account details with your recipient before sending

  • No account found — we couldn't find an account with those details. Double-check all account details with your recipient before sending.

  • Account closed — the recipient’s account is closed. You will not be able to send money to this account.

Name checks only happen between banks that have the Confirmation of Payee connection established.

You can still send out money regardless of the match result — the outcome is just to help you feel more secure when sending your money.

Receiving money to your Wise AUD account

When someone sends money to your Wise AUD account, their bank might check the name they enter against your Wise account details. All information is transmitted securely between banks. For personal accounts, your name is only shown to senders when there's a match or close match.

Wise personal account

If the name they entered shows a Match or Close match, your name will appear to the sender. If it's a No match, your name won't appear to them.

Wise business accounts

Your business name will always be displayed to the sender, regardless of how much it matches.

What to share with senders

Give the sender your account name, and BSB and account number exactly as they appear on your Wise account, including correct spelling and any middle names.

Opting out of CoP

If you’d like to opt your Wise account out of Confirmation of Payee, send an email to aus_confirmationofpayee@wise.com with the following format:

Email subject: Confirmation of Payee Opt-Out Request

Email text:

  • The full name on your Wise account

  • Your Wise account membership number starting with P, followed by 8 numbers

  • Specific profile for opt-out, like your personal or business profile

  • Reasons for opting out of CoP

We aim to review your request within 1 working day. Approvals for opt-out requests will be up to Wise.

Opting out may reduce the likelihood of people sending you money.

CoP and PayID

CoP and PayID are different services.

Confirmation of Payee checks names when you use BSB and account numbers.

PayID lets you use a phone number, email, or ABN instead, and automatically confirms the recipient's name.
