What are Jars and how can I keep money in them?

Jars are for money you want to set aside and keep separate from your balances, like for future use. The rates are no different to holding a regular balance.

You can open a Jar if you’re in a country where we offer balances.

What can I do with Jars?

Once you have a Jar, you can:

  • Add money from any of your balances

  • Withdraw money to a balance that’s in the same currency as the Jar

  • Send a transfer from your Jar

  • Schedule a transfer from your Jar

You can open as many Jars as you want for things like:

  • saving up for a holiday or big purchase

  • setting aside money for a rainy day

  • storing money you want to send at a later point in time

  • planning for bills or budgeting

  • investing your money as Interest or Stocks for available regions — this can also be done from balances

You can’t spend it with your Wise debit card or use it to pay Direct Debits, so you won’t accidentally spend your savings, but you can send the money from it like you would from a balance.

How do I open a Jar?

From the Home screen on the web or app:

  1. Select the ‘+ New’ panel. You might have to scroll to the far right

  2. Select Jar

  3. Select your currency

  4. Give it a name and icon

  5. Add money from a balance — make sure you’ve added money to your balance first

How do I send money out from a Jar?

If you want to put the money back to your balance, or send it out to your own or someone else’s account — go to the Home screen on your web or app:

  1. Choose the Jar you want to send from

  2. Select Send

  3. Enter the amount you want to send, choose a recipient, and enter a reference

Sending limits are the same as when sending from your balance in the same currency.

If the Jar is held as Interest, Stocks, or Yield, the option to send from this Jar is only available in countries that give instant access to your money.

How do I close a Jar?

Make sure you don’t have any money in it before closing it.

If you’re using Interest, Stocks, or Yield, you have to change the Jar back to cash before you can close it. When you change back to cash, the remaining units will be sold, and you’ll then see the option to close your Jar.

  1. Select your Jar

  2. Select More or the three dots (...)

  3. You'll see the option to close your Jar

You can always open a new Jar.

Singapore and US customers

If you have a personal account with an address in Singapore, you can only use Jars when you invest in Assets.

US customers that have opted in to earn interest can only receive interest on their main USD, GBP or EUR balances. This type of interest isn't available for Jars at this time.
