What is 2-step verification?

2-step verification is a necessary layer of security on your account that helps keep your account protected, on top of your password. We use 2-step verification when we need to confirm it's really you.

You'll be prompted for it in most cases where you need to enter your password, but sometimes you'll need to use only your password without 2-step, and sometimes you'll need to use 2-step without a password. We do this to keep your account and money safe.

Why we use 2-step verification

Even if someone finds your password, 2-step verification helps stop them getting into your account.

You’ll also be able to see that someone else has tried to log in, because you’ll get a code or notification.

3 options for your 2-step verification

You can choose one of three ways to complete 2-step verification.

  • Receive a notification in the Wise app on a trusted device — we’ll send a notification to the Wise app on your trusted device, and you’ll need to confirm on your device to continue.

  • Enter a code from a separate authenticator app — you’ll need to pair the authenticator app with your Wise account first, then we’ll ask for the code from your authenticator app

  • Receive a code by text message or phone call — we’ll send you a code by text message or phone call, and you’ll need to enter the code before you can continue

It’s best to use the Wise app or an authenticator app for 2-step verification because they're more secure. They only need an internet connection, so they’ll work even if you’re abroad, or changed your SIM.

What if I don't want 2-step verification?

We understand that it's an extra step, especially when you want to use Wise quickly. But we always make sure your account is protected, so this is a necessary step in your security. You can always choose how we do it from the 3 options above.
